We all know her, some wish they could be her, but none can actually stay in rhythm with her. Don’t even act like you can. Martha the Mop Lady has swept the Hoosiers off their feet since the mid-1970s.

“Martha” auditioned for the role in Chicago Illinois, where she had been working ticket sales for the Blackhawks. Her task was simple, push a mop through Assembly Hall and sing the IU fight song.

Simple, yes. Insignificant? Not so much.

Martha the Mop Lady has become a tradition absolutely necessary for the beginning of every IUBB home game. Taking place immediately after the National Anthem, with the lights turned low, Martha starts the hype that Hoosier fans are so well known for.

Sadly, the commercial wasn’t played at games for 20+ years. I’m not sure what got fans clapping and singing then, maybe Lance Bennett’s “Get in the Game,” which is another topic in itself.

In 2010, Martha was brought back to life! Let the Halloween and game day costumes begin! Her commercial still plays right after the National Anthem at every home game today. While no one can keep the claps on beat or compete with her vocally, she is definitely a crowd favorite.

Belting out “Indiana, Our Indiana” in the loneliness of after-hours cleaning, this not-your-ordinary mop lady will always be Martha, our Martha.
