Christina Loukas – From Illini to Hoosier to Olympian

Few universities, or even nations can match IU’s overall Olympic record. Indiana University boasts 191 total Olympic berths, representing 22 countries. On 14 occasions Olympic coaches have come from IU.

Christina Loukas (2004-08) is one of these lucky young athletes.

Christina grew up in Riverwoods, Illinois and attended Deerfield High School.  She started diving at age 12 and has been ever since.

At Indiana University, Christina make her mark quickly by breaking many records and taking home multiple first place ribbons on 1 and 3 meter diving boards.  She was even named Big Ten Diver of the Year as well as finishing 6th in the World Championships on the 1 meter board in her first year.  Christina just kept getting better and better.

In the coming years, she continued her excellence by finishing second on the three-meter, sixth on the one-meter and won the National Championship in the synchronize platform with former IU standout Cassandra Cardinell during her Sophomore Year.  During her Junior year, Christina finally won her first National title with a gold at  Kaiser Permanente National Championship along with many other awards and recognition such as multiple Big Ten Diver of the week and many record breaking dives.  Christina even helped lead the team to a Big Ten Championship.  If you would like to read all of here accomplishments while at IU… click here!

Christina decided to red-shirt during her senior year in order to train for the Olympics which turned out to be a great decision   She made the 2008 team!  Chistina ended up placing fourth at the 2008 FINA Swimming World Cup, and ninith in Beijing, China at the 2008 Summer Olymipics.  Christina’s olympic career didn’t stop there; she ended up making the team again in 2012.  She placed eighth this year on the 3 meter diving platform.

Of all her acomplishments, these are the most notable.

    • 2008 & 2012 U.S. Olympic Team
    • 8 time NCAA All- American
    • Nine-time national champion (1-meter 2007, 2008, 2009 x2; 3-meter 2010, 2011; synchronized 3-meter 2009, 2010; synchronized 10-meter 2006)

Christina Loukas is currently living and training in Woodland, Texas with Ken Armstrong.  Hopefully, she will extend her acomplishment list by becoming part of the 2016 Olympic Team.
